Religious Education (R.E)

At Northern House Academy, our R.E curriculum is built around and underpinned by our School values. As such our approach is designed around understanding the needs of each individual child, is unapologetic in its high expectation, knowing that our children are not defined by their needs but instead viewed with the positivity they need in order to be nurtured both emotionally and academically, it is consistent in order to enable a safe environment where our pupils are empowered to take risks and experience success and it must be a R.E curriculum that promotes the simple pleasure of happiness.

We believe that it is important to develop our pupils’ understanding of the diversity of cultures and religions within our world. We encourage our pupils to develop their ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, and in relation to their perspective on life. We support our pupils to gain knowledge and respect for other people’s faiths, feelings and values. Through learning about others and exploring R.E themes in our thematic approaches to learning, we encourage our pupils to develop a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them, utilising their imagination and creativity in order to reflect on theirs and others experiences.

Our R.E curriculum is supported by our Values-led approach to learning, which helps our students to recognise the difference between right and wrong and support them to apply this understanding to their own actions and lives. Our R.E Curriculum is also supported by our PSHE curriculum, through which we recognise and analyse the legal boundaries that connect to themes within R.E. and establish respect for the civil and criminal law of England within our students.

Part of our Thematic approach to learning in our R.E Curriculum is designed to help our pupils use a range of social skills in different contexts in order to work and socialise effectively. With other pupils, they participate in a variety of community events and social situations. In doing so, they are demonstrating their ability to accept and engage with the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of the law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

It is our intention, that through teaching a broad and wide range of R.E our pupils will develop an understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage. This essential element of our pupils’ preparation for life in modern Britain begins with celebrating and appreciating the range of different cultures in our school, before applying this understanding to the wider community and world.
